Reverend Susan Carter is our Priest.
The Reverend Susan Carter comes to St. John’s Episcopal Church from St. Michael’s in Lansing where she was a priest associate following her ordination on July 1, 2010. She was named priest-in-charge of St. John’s in January of this year.
Mother Susan was called to the priesthood in November 2004, and graduated with a Master of Divinity degree in May 2009. Along with her duties at St. John’s, she is a full professor in the School of Journalism at Michigan State University where she teaches law and ethics, broadcasting, and sports journalism. Prior to joining the faculty at MSU, Mother Susan was a reporter and anchor in Detroit at WWJ-AM and WDIV-TV. In the 1980s she served as press secretary to Michigan governor Jim Blanchard.
An international traveler since she was seven, she most recently was in Africa shooting a documentary on childhood malaria. In 2001, she led an all-women expedition to the North Pole.
In addition to a M.Div. from The General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church in New York, Mother Susan holds a B.A. in Humanities from MSU, and a M.A. in History and a law degree from Wayne State University. She will shortly begin work on a Doctor of Ministry in Preaching from Seabury-Western in Evanston, Ill.
Her daughter Amanda and son-in-law David and grandson Benjamin live in New York.
