History
St. John's began as a small group of dedicated people whose vision, enthusiasm,
and love for God attracted others to their faith and fellowship.
In 1857, Rev. Henry Banwell came to Livingston County as a missionary and
All Saints Church of Howell was formed as a mission of the Diocese of
Michigan. Worship services were held at the Court House and at the
Congregational Church.
For reasons no longer known, the church was renamed Saint John's Episcopal Church
of Howell and the cornerstone of the original church was laid in 1880 at
Walnut and Sibley Streets. The building still stands. In 1950 a period of sustained
growth began.
In 1956 a forward looking step was taken with the purchase of four and one-half acres
of property at the present location. In 1959, St. John's was incorporated and
admitted as a self-supporting parish in union with the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan.
Ground was broken for the present building on October 10, 1971 and on April 9, 1972
The Rt. Rev. H. Coleman McGehee, Bishop Coadjutor of the Diocese of Michigan presided
at the dedication of our building.
In 2006-7 a major building expansion added additional room to our kitchen and social hall,
new offices, an enlarged nursery, and gathering hall.
